As a faculty member in the National Institute of Education, Singapore, my primary roles will be that of a teacher educator and a researcher.
My main goal as a teacher educator...
is to share what I have learned about effective and appropriate technology integration with teachers in Singapore. In addition, given the growing demand for flexible, realistic, and on-the-job teacher training, I aim to a) lead the reexamination of NIE’s model of teacher preparation with respect to technology integration, and b) create online courses on technology integration for in-service teachers.
My main goal as a researcher...
is to build on my dissertation research on scaffolded reflection using blogs and discussion forums. I will investigate how these tools may be integrated into the teacher preparation curriculum to promote reflection. I will diversify my research by exploring a) how my colleagues and teachers use these tools in different content areas, and b) how emerging online tools (e.g. wikis) promote reflection and collaboration.
My goals are grounded on the underlying philosophy...
that technology should not be used for its own sake or because they are “cool tools”. To be effective, technology integration should change learners’ knowledge, skills, or attitudes over time. Technology integration should start with realistic targets and innovative ideas, but be tempered with empirically-based research and time-proven standards.
